Byron Bay Welcome
Byron Bay is situated on the most easterly point of Australia.
It is on the New South Wales north coast, about 790 kilometers
north of Sydney and 173 kilometers south of Brisbane.
Byron Bay got its name from Captain James Cook who commented
on the place by saying "It may be known by a remarkable
high peaked mountain lying inland northwest by west from it.
Inland it is pretty high and hilly, but near the shore it is
low; to the southward of the point the land is low, and tolerable
level." It was named "Cape Byron" after the
grandfather of the poet Lord Byron, Vice-Admiral John Byron.
It is a place that is famous for its beautiful beaches and unspoiled
nature reserves. Byron Bay has seen a dramatic rise in population
with busy city people seeking refuge from their stressful lives.
Wealthy baby boomers are also choosing to move to the beachside
town in large numbers to retire in the idyllic surrounds.
Byron Bay probably gets most of its media attention from the
alternative culture that the town has taken on, and the numerous
celebrities that choose to reside or recuperate in the place.
Byron Bay is an accepting place where wealthy city folk, young
backpackers, baby boomers, and freedom loving hippies all live
side by side.
